Villa description

With panoramic views over luxuriant rice paddies stretching to the Indian Ocean, Villa Mandalay provides a lavish, exotic hideaway in Tabanan, on Bali’s scenic south west coast. With the option of renting from six to seven bedrooms, this spacious villa provides ample space for families and small groups. Sweeping lawns fringed by lush tropical gardens framing a picturesque backdrop also make Mandalay ideal for wedding parties. Friendly and professional staff are on hand to welcome you, while highlights include a 25-metre swimming pool, charming ‘pitch and putt’ golf course, sauna, extensive a la carte menu.

It is said that green is soothing for the soul, so with its glorious location in a sea of verdant rice fields, your stay at Villa Mandalay promises to be a serene one.

The villa’s tranquil setting is enhanced by a perfectly balanced contemporary design, with 25 metres of green-stone-tiled swimming pool creating a magnificent focal point. Buildings of creamy stone, with ironwood shingle roofs and rich dark timber accents, provide luxurious living and sleeping areas for up to 14 people. An enchanting bamboo pavilion set in water gardens grants unobstructed views and creates an atmospheric setting for casual breakfasts, sunset cocktails and candlelit dinners. Tropical gardens filled with frangipani, cala lilies and heliconia add swathes of colour, while lively fish ponds complement the tropical scenery.

Indonesian artwork adorns the villa, with a strong avian-theme reflected in Balinese paintings, and colourful carved wooden statues from Kalimantan, alongside elaborate friezes and a fascinating display of ethnic artefacts.

Golf enthusiasts will love the six-tee ‘pitch and putt’ golf course set into the lower gardens, and the villa’s proximity to the multi-award-winning Nirwana Bali Golf Course, which hugs the rocky coastline, offering stunning views over the venerated sea temple of Tanah Lot. Those wanting to relax can take a leisurely stroll to the glistening black sand beach at Seseh, soak up the warmth of the Finnish-style sauna, or enjoy a soothing massage in the garden bale (pavilion) provided by a skilled therapist from a reputable local spa salon.

A stepping-stone path leads across a flourishing lily pond to the entrance of the villa, whose symmetrical design creates a tasteful and elegant space, with single storey contemporary Balinese-style pavilions arranged in a U-shape around a long rectangular swimming pool. Four guest bedrooms lie in pairs on each side of the pool, while the two masters flank the main living and dining area. Stairs lead to a lower garden and a studio bedroom adjacent to the sauna overlooking the ‘pitch and putt’ golf lawns.

Friendly staff include a talented chef who prepares Western and Asian meals from an a la carte menu, as well as sumptuous Balinese-style feasts. A complimentary car and driver is also on hand to whisk you away to island attractions, such as white water rafting, the galleries and ornate Hindu temples of Ubud, or a world-class shopping and dining experience in Seminyak.

LIVING AND DINING AREAS

The villa’s entrance is dominated by a large Palimanan-stone frieze flanked by elegant Javanese statues, leading to the fan-cooled living and dining area with its wooden floors, soaring ceiling and evocative Indonesian artwork. A glass-topped dining table seats 12, with an additional small table seating four. Large alcoves on either side have built-in sofas upholstered in earthy hues, and coffee tables strewn with magazines. A bar area at the back is equipped with an iPod dock and surround-sound system, while ethnic artefacts are displayed against a red feature wall. A guest washroom lies to one side and on the other is a kitchen equipped with everything required to cook up a storm. The steep sloping rattan ceilings of the mezzanine level create an atmospheric air-conditioned space for reclining on mattresses and cushions, and watching the 61-inch TV and movies with surround sound. Shelves are filled with DVD’s and novels.

Steps lead down from the living room to the 25-metre swimming pool tiled in green stone and surrounded by sun loungers shaded by stylish parasols. Walk along the timber deck to the atmospheric bamboo pavilion set in water gardens flourishing with brightly hued cala lilies and colourful fish. Furnished with slatted timber dining table, eight chairs, and comfortable rattan lounge suite, the pavilion has panoramic views stretching to the sea. Descending to the lower level, the aroma of cedar wood awaits in a full-sized Finnish-style sauna with lovely garden outlook, and a separate shower room.

The whole property is ringed with flourishing foliage, from frangipani to palms, and birds of paradise flowers. The six-tee ‘pitch and putt’ golf course is laid out on perfectly manicured lawns but gives the sensation of being right in the middle of the rice fields. A small thatched bale (pavilion) in the corner of the garden is a place for rest and respite.

 BEDROOMS

All bedrooms are air conditioned, with ceiling fans, king-size beds furnished with crisp white linens and flat-screen TV’s with DVD players. Walk-through dressing rooms lead to stately ensuite bathrooms tiled in grey andesite stone, with twin vanities (except for the studio), statue-filled alcoves and customised amenities.

- Master bedrooms
Two generously sized master bedrooms flank the living room, identical but for their artwork. Ceilings are gracefully tiered and softly illuminated in the evenings, long wooden desks nestle in window alcoves with garden outlooks, and each has a timber deck encircled by hedges and flower boxes, and furnished with a table, chairs and daybed. Large bathrooms include separate his-and-hers vanities and oversize terrazzo bathtubs.

- Guest bedrooms
Four guest bedrooms are arranged around the swimming pool, opening directly onto timber decking. Additional glass doors lead to fringing gardens at the back. The front two rooms have views over the lush rice fields, and are fitted with attractive window seats from which to enjoy them. The other two rooms have window alcoves with built-in desks overlooking tropical gardens.

- Studio bedroom
Off the lower garden, the studio is the smallest and most private of the bedrooms and has an enchanting timber deck, furnished with sun loungers, set on a thriving lotus pond. The bathroom is tiled in gleaming Indian stone, with a single vanity and walk-in shower. This room is adjacent to the sauna.

DINING

Chef Alit is at your service to prepare daily breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Villa Mandalay offers an extensive a la carte menu of delicious meals featuring Asian and Western dishes to cater to all tastes, with an excellent selection of vegetarian and children’s options. Make sure to try the pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf,) and the bebek betutu (a Balinese specialty of duck cooked in herbs.) Chef Alit can also grill up a feast of fresh seafood on the barbecue, and tailor meals to accommodate any special dietary requirements or specific requests. A stay is not complete without sampling one of the Balinese set menus, served buffet style!

To make the most of the kitchen and give staff time to shop, it is a good idea to plan breakfast, lunch and dinner selections the evening before. Guests will be requested to provide grocery money in advance, and the staff will do the shopping and keep receipts for reference. Should you wish to self cater, staff will be happy to shop for you, with a 20%++ surcharge.

CHILDREN

The family friendly advantages of a villa holiday are many, including access to your own private facilities and the freedom to use them whenever you want. Knowing that the kids can run around happily, independently and safely, without you having to worry about other guests, is a real plus – and one that means parents are certain to have a more relaxed holiday too.

Villa Mandalay is a great villa for families with children, who will love the lawns and gardens, swimming pool and chance to play golf. Those with toddlers will need to be vigilant, due to numerous fishponds and water features.

The team of friendly staff will make children feel as welcome as adults, and having these willing helpers on hand gives guests plenty of flexibility and freedom to do their own exploring beyond the villa grounds (full-time babysitting incurs a small extra cost).

Although the equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals for fussy eaters or babies with ease, staff will happily to do this for you – just talk through your requirements and meal schedules with the villa manager or chef and they will take care of the rest. Pancakes by the pool for breakfast? Chicken fingers for tea? No problem. The chef can customise all meals to suit children’s taste buds.

Don’t worry about packing all that cumbersome kids’ equipment for your stay. Just let us know what you need, and anything we they don’t have in-house (villa facilities include a baby cot, highchair, and kids movies) we can hire on your behalf.

SPA

Villa Mandalay has its own Finnish-style sauna, which can be perfectly followed by a body scrub or massage; just ask our staff to bring the spa to you! We can recommend deluxe treatments carried out in the privacy of your own villa by fully trained therapists from a reputable local spa (extra charges will apply).

WEDDINGS & EVENTS

With verdant sweeping lawns fringed by lush tropical gardens, stunning backdrop of Bali’s famous rice fields, and an absolutely private setting, Villa Mandalay is an idyllic spot for weddings and other special events.

We can recommend expert event organisers, florists, decorators and caterers so you can focus on relaxing and celebrating with your guests. Please check with us for all costs and conditions.

Around the villa

Villa Mandalay’s rural setting, near the small village of Munggu, means there is little in the immediate vicinity apart from neighbouring villas, a scattering of local houses, and a small warung (local café) situated a couple of hundred metres away. A gentle stroll through the village will bring you to the black sands of Seseh beach (2kms) while Tanah Lot Temple (8kms), the Nirwana Bali Golf Course (7kms) and the Pan Pacific Nirwana Resort (7kms) with a number of good restaurants, are all easily visited. Cosmopolitan Seminyak with its plethora of restaurants, bars and boutiques is just 13kms from the villa.

Things to do
Villa Mandalay’s manager will have a wealth of information about nearby places of interest and will help arrange transport and make any bookings required. Do also ask the staff about the local area. Many of them live nearby and will be able to give an interesting insight into some of the fascinating aspects of Bali life.

In the meantime, here is a taste of the many and varied activities on offer within reach of the villa.

Villa Mandalay is close to the famous temple at Tanah Lot (8km), a beautiful temple set on a rocky, wave battered island just metres off the beach. In peak season a few too many tourists may transform a sunset visit into more of a heaving photo opportunity than a moving experience. Visiting early in the morning (8-9am) provides a better idea of the power of the location and the chance to see it undisturbed apart from perhaps an offering ceremony.

A nice sunset alternative is to head down to Echo Beach (6km) where a number of cafes offer good sunset views and cold beer, including famous nightly barbecue at Echo Beach House. Note that the beach here is dark volcanic sand and the waters are better suited to surfing, having a pronounced swell and rip, rather than children’s swimming. Hotel Tugu, a very stylish and eclectic boutique hotel a few minutes further down the coast was created by one of Indonesia’s premier art collectors, and provides a range of atmospheric dining experiences.

Horseriding at Kuda P stables on professionally trained horses and ponies will take you through the lush rice terraces around Kerobokan, or provide the chance for a sunset gallop through the surf along the rugged south-western coast.

Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Seminyak, Bali’s most cosmopolitan enclave (6km). Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, chic boutiques. There is a wide choice of fine dining, mid range, and cheap ‘n cheerful restaurants in Seminyak too: fine dining venues include Sarong, the famous Ku Dé Ta, Mama San, Merah Putih, La Lucciola, Sardine and Métis.

Play a round at the unbelievably scenic Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields and just down from Tanah Lot sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia. The twelth hole is one of the most photographed in the world, as it overlooks the famous Tanah Lot temple.
